Prawit Wongsuwan (พล ตัณฑเสถียร) is a retired Royal Thai Army officer who is currently serving as the deputy prime minister and minister of defense in Thailand. He was born on August 11, 1945, in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Prawit joined the army in 1969 and retired in 1994 with the rank of colonel.
Prawit Wongsuwan is a close ally of Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and has been serving in his current role since 2014. He is seen as one of the most influential political figures in Thailand, with a reputation for being a loyalist and a tough enforcer.
During his career in the military, Prawit played a key role in several major military operations, including the 1981 military coup that overthrew the government of General Prem Tinsulanonda. He later served as the commander-in-chief of the army from 1992 to 1993.
Prawit Wongsuwan has been the subject of controversy in recent years, including allegations of corruption and the controversial purchase of military equipment from China. Despite these controversies, he remains one of the most powerful figures in Thai politics.
